Why study religion?
Students who are interested in a broadly based liberal arts curriculum should consider
a major or minor in religion. Religion is inherently cross-disciplinary in that the
methods of history, literature, philosophy, linguistics, and anthropology are used. It is
also cross-cultural in that Western and non-Western, ancient and modern cultures are under
investigation.
Religion majors and minors go on to various careers. Many pursue church-related
vocations such as ministry, religious education, church music or pastoral counseling.
Others enter social work, teaching, medicine, law, business, or public service. Religion
majors and minors learn practical skills of close reading, critical thinking, and careful
writing skills essential to success in many areas of life.
Coupled with advanced degrees, the undergraduate study of religion may also be used to
prepare for an academic career such as teaching religion at the junior college, college,
or seminary level.
The American Academy of Religion has a wonderful website that further
explores the question, Why Study
Religion?. (When you click on the this link it will take you out of
